Breast Lift

A Breast lift, otherwise known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to reshape breasts that sag due to weight loss, pregnancy and nursing changes, or aging effects on the breasts. Also the areola may be reduced if desired. The breasts may be further enhanced with the placement of a breast implant at the same time to enlarge and help maintain the size and shape desired.

The procedure can be done with sedation and a local anesthetic, but may also require general anesthesia depending on the extent of the procedure. It may take anywhere from one to three hours, and most patients go home the same day. The techniques involve removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue and areola. Sometimes the incision can be just around the outer edge of the areola, but often it may require a vertical or a vertical and horizontal incision. The scars are permanent, but usually fade within one year so they are less noticeable. Dr. Bull will discuss with you the best option for you to achieve the best result.

After the procedure the discomfort is usually minimal and can be controlled with pain pills. Bruising, swelling and soreness will tend to improve and most patients are feeling well enough to return to work in 5 to 10 days. More strenuous activity can be resumed by 4 weeks. Occasionally dry skin and numbness may occur, but this usually resolves quickly. Other risks should be discussed with Dr. Bull prior to the procedure. The risks are rare but include asymmetry, wide scars, bleeding, infection and permanent sensation changes in the nipple.

Mastopexy can be a very gratifying procedure for the patient if the goals and expectations are realistic. Dr. Bull will work with you to discuss any concerns you may have and help you understand what can be achieved with this procedure.
