The 2007 statistics for cosmetic surgery have just recently been published. Of interest is the number of procedures done by members of the Society, all of whom are board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Approximately 11 million surgical and non-surgical procedures were done in 2007, 2 million of which were surgical procedures. The top 5 surgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were, liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty and facelift. The top 5 non-surgical procedures done were Botox injections, filler injections (hyaluronic acid by far the most popular), laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and laser skin treatments.

For women the top 6 procedures included breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and breast lift and facelift. For men liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, male breast reduction and hair transplantation were the top 5 procedures. Interestingly approximately 80% of men and women felt that they would not be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery. Age 35 to 50 encompassed the greatest percentage of patients undergoing cosmetic procedures (46%). Women had 91% of the procedures. With surgical procedures increasing 114% in the last 10 years and non surgical procedures increasing by over 700%, it is obvious that less invasive office based procedures have increased greatly in this timeframe. Traditional racial and ethnic minorities this past year encompassed approximately 21% of all cosmetic procedures.

Certainly the number of procedures performed continues to expand, including both surgical and non-surgical. One admonition that I would offer to all who consider either type of procedure would be to always consider a surgeon who has received his board certification through The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
